1892 Algernon Bangs House is a historic house
at 16 East Chestnut Street in Augusta, Maine.

Although this hybrid course (in-person and Zoom) has been a regular UMASC offering, it attempts to add something new each time. The course will examine Maine’s culture through the lense of architecture and landscape architecture by discussing many slides of local examples.

Hopefully, there is something for all levels of experience with the topic. Class participation is greatly appreciated as we explore ideas of history, historic preservation, and Maine culture.

A weekly list of local structures (numbering 20-30) can be used as the outline of a self-guided tour.

Finally, a behind-the-scenes tour of Vaughan Homestead in Hallowell on November 10 will conclude the class. A second site visit will hear Richard Parkhurst talk about moving the John Calvin Stevens-designed home from Western Avenue.  We’ll also explore ideas for preserving vulnerable structures in Augusta.
