This is an opportunity to join your senior college friends and visit trails that are open to the public located in the Augusta area.  Trails will vary from easy to intermediate.  Along the trails feel free to share your knowledge of trees, birds, wildflower, rocks and other things we might see. Lunch afterwards is optional.
On the first class date only, we will meet in a classroom on the UMA Campus in order to fill out the required paperwork and then go out on the nearby UMA Nature Trail.Â
All subsequent weeks we will meet at the trail head parking lots. Transportation is up to you. Directions will be provided prior to each walk.
We will walk portions of the following trial networks and and limit the walking time to 1 1/2 hours or less for each trail. Â
(1) UMA Nature Trails – September 23
(2) Augusta Nature Education Center Trails – September 30
(Skip Wednesday October 7)Â
(3) Vaughn Woods Trails and Homestead Property – October 14
(4) Togus VA Medical Center Trails – October 21
(5) Viles Arboretum Trails- October 28
Two rain dates are schedule at the end of the semester (November 4 & November 11) to use if any of the above walks are cancelled due to rain.
Walk the Trails of Augusta
In 2016 Cheryl Fontaine retired from the Maine Department of Enviornmental Protection as a Senior Geologist. She is an avid volunteer for Senor College, serving on the Curriculum and Office Committees with a focus on bringing new nature related courses to the college.
Cheryl lives in Sidney with her husband, Louis and cat Tipper. Her other interest included bird watching, quilting, learning French and, of course, rock collecting.

Nina Mollicone grew up in Winthrop, Maine, and graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. in Zoology. Seeking a career in which she could get a job virtually anywhere, she returned to school and earned a degree in nursing. After several years of working in acute care, including Intensive Care and ten years in the Emergency Room, she returned to school, obtaining master’s degrees from the University of Southern Maine in Adult Education and in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In addition to nursing, Nina worked as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in community mental health and in private practice. In retirement, Nina is enjoying her canine and feline family and returning to her roots, exploring and studying almost anything nature related.
