Marvelous Birds

1 Monday class followed by a Tuesday field session at the Viles Arboretum in Augusta.
Let’s talk about what makes a bird a bird, including feathers, bones, eyesight, digestion and toe arrangement. All play a part to help the bird to do what it does best, which is to fly! We‘ll also discover the features birders rely on to identify a bird in the field much more than color alone. We can try out our new skills and see some marvelous birds in action on our field day. Please bring your binoculars. Class size will be limited to 15 students.
The field session of the class will be at the Viles Arboretum in Augusta. (Rain date will be scheduled if needed)
Cheryl Ring will be assisted by Sue Kistenmacher both in the classroom and in the field.
There will be a $10.00 per person fee to cover the cost of photocopying and renting the
Arboretum.
Cheryl Ring is an ardent birder and a graduate of the Maine Master Naturalist Program. She is a member of the Augusta Birding Club and coordinates Augusta’s Christmas Bird Count. She has birded in many countries around the world, but really loves birding in Maine.
Sue Kistenmacher taught biology and science in area schools for 30 years and continues to teach at the Hidden Valley Nature Center and the Maine Master Naturalist Program. She has also been “bitten by the birding bug” and gets out in the field as much as she can.
