Come to Viles Arboretum for a lively and interesting class focusing on the nurturing of nature. Presented by Viles Arboretum Executive Director (and longtime Senior College instructor) David Greenham, and educator Molly Doccola, this 8-week class touches on topics such as plant identification, gardening and composting, mindfulness in interactions with nature, nutrition, cooking with natural foods, the latest on microplastics and other things that threaten our food sources, and opportunities to experiment with sketching and journaling in nature. Â
Classes will meet at Viles Arboretum in Augusta. Viles Arboretum is a 224-acre nature preserve featuring more than six miles of trails that is open year-round. In addition to the trails, which are available free of charge from sunrise to sunset, 365-days a year, Viles Arboretum hosts many activities, classes, and special events.

This class is made possible through a grant from the Maine Council of Aging. The program, Connection Health and Equity through Food (CHEF) is supported by Hannaford and was awarded to Viles Arboretum. The course was designed by educator Molly Doccola and Viles Arboretum Executive Director David Greenham. There will be guest instructors for nearly every class, and plenty of time for fun and reflection.
Established in 1982, Viles Arboretum is located in Augusta, on the city’s east side, just south of the Mayfair neighborhood. The mission of Viles Arboretum is to provide educational, recreational, and inspirational opportunities through the conservation of our natural environment. Our forests, wetlands, and fields are explorable across six miles of walking, hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing trails. Viles Arboretum stewards more than 300 species of trees and shrubs from Maine and around the world. Our trails are free and open to the public from sunrise to sunset every day. More than 35,000 people visit each year.
