You have these experiences you want to remember; you have these ideas for a fictional story; you have knowledge about a specific subject you want to record; maybe you need to sign up for Writers’ Workshop to get started.

This fall Janet will use excerpts from Memoir as Medicine: The Healing Power of Writing Your Messy, Imperfect, Unruly (but Gorgeously Yours) Life Story, by Nancy Slonim Aronie. You do not need to buy this book. In addition to sharing these excerpts and other sources, during each session you’ll write to three prompts. Janet writes along with you.

Students will share their ideas and often read what they have written. You will accumulate a body of work that can often lead to longer writings if you want to expand on them. Janet does not collect nor correct your work. By the end, it is her hope that you write a final paper that you edit and submit for a class chapbook and that you will share at one of the last two sessions.

NOTE: There will be a $15.00 per student fee to cover cost of printing and mailing of the chapbook.

Writers’ Workshop – PM

Janet Cowperthwaite has worked with Writers’ Workshop in her second-grade class and in a graduate writing class. The workshop that Janet has been leading in Senior College has evolved from those experiences, and she feels her job is to be facilitator, encourager, and cheerleader.

Janet graduated from Houlton High School in 1959 and from the University of Maine in 1963 with a degree in English and credits to be certified as an elementary teacher. She earned a master’s in education, also from UMaine in 1992.
