In the Spring semester we offered a class on Eight Distinctive Voices in American Music. The course examined vocalists, both noteworthy and lesser known, who influenced generations of blues, jazz, R&B, soul and gospel singers. This semester we will continue the same theme with Eight More Distinctive Voices. We will cover the careers and musical legacies of Louis Jordan, Mose Allison, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Esther Phillips, Etta James, Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Each vocalist has an engaging bio and played an influential role in American popular music. With the exception of Mose Allison each of the singers had periodic levels of commercial success in careers that stretched from three to six decades.
