Central Maine’s
Modern Architectural History
(1900-present)

Instructor: Daniel Mitchell

Wednesdays • 7 classes – 3/17-4/28 • 5:30 PM

Class size 5-24 students
19 seats remaining
Location: Zoom

This seven-week course will cover five blocks of time (1900-1920, 1920-1930, 1930-1940, 1940-1960, 1960-Present). Classes will be roughly one hour, and we’ll look at slides of examples of local architecture from each period, making connections to the larger architectural themes of that period. Many of the local examples will be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We’ll talk about historic preservation in general, and discuss how structures can become listed. Also, we’ll analyze recent structures (from the last 50 years) that could merit future preservation. The week’s notes will be emailed to students, as well as a list of the 20 or so local structures mentioned. The notes have the potential to be used as a self-guided driving (or walking) tour of Maine’s architectural history. Maybe another diversion in these restricted times?

Dan Mitchell is an enthusiastic advocate for historic restoration, traditional building, and Maine’s culture. He has a small restoration carpentry business in Sidney called River Road Restoration.
