Hearing Loss & Hearing Aids in the Real World – Strategies to Improve Your Success in Hearing

This is a five-part course and discussion about hearing loss and hearing aids.  We’ll talk realistically about hearing loss and its profound impact on our lives.  We’ll discuss the effectiveness and limitations of hearing aids in the real world and how they are only part of the solution.  The ‘Beyond Hearing Aids’ class talks about listening and speaking strategies, how hearing loss is a family affair, and how each one of us can play an essential role to make both speaking and listening easier on everyone.   We’ll have lots of time for discussion, so bring your questions! 

Class outline: five (two hour) classes will cover the following areas:

Class 1. Opening Discussion and How We Hear with Our Ears and Our Brain

Class 2. Hearing Testing—What to Expect and Understanding Test Results

Class 3. Introduction to Digital Hearing Aids

Class 4. Advanced Hearing Aid functions and options

Class 5. Beyond Hearing Aids—Communication Strategies for the Real World

Hearing Loss and Hearing Aids in the Real World

Eric C. Risch, M.S. is a graduate from the University of Maine in Farmington and has a Master of Science in Audiology from the University of Rhode Island. He’s a retired clinical audiologist from the Togus VA Audiology Department. His areas of specialization are aural rehabilitation with emphasis on tinnitus treatment, communication counseling, and hearing aids. He was also an adjunct instructor for University of Southern Maine in addition to presenting numerous conference lectures on age and noise related hearing loss, tinnitus therapy, dual-sensory loss, digital hearing aids, and communication counseling.
