This course will discuss the criminal punishments that are used in this country. The class will also consider the theoretical goals of punishment and whether the sanctions available meet those goals. The issue of recidivism will be addressed and which punishments, according to research, reduce the chances of repeat offending. The class will also include at least one field trip and speaker from the criminal justice system.
Note:  This is not a continuation of  last semester’s “Let’s Talk Crime” course and that course is not a prerequisite.Â
Crime and Punishment
Gail Rioux has a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Albany University, State University of New York. She taught criminal justice for over thirty years and was chair of a criminal justice department and a dean. Her research interests focused on prisons, domestic violence, and juvenile delinquency.
