Description

The course will examine eight women who significantly influenced 20th Century America. We will discuss the careers of  labor leaders Mother Jones and Delores Huerta, suffragette Alice Paul, human rights activists Dorothy Day and Frances Perkins, anti-lynching journalist and suffragette Ida B. Wells and civil rights leaders Ella Baker and Fannie Lou Hamer.  While there will be a discussion of their backgrounds, the focus of the class will be on their noteworthy accomplishments and contributions as influential American leaders. While several women may be familiar names, others are far less known. All have had inspiring and compelling stories that have been partially obscured by misogyny and racism.
